Margulis-Platonov Conjecture

The Margulis-Platonov conjecture describes noncentral normal subgroups of the rational-point group of an absolutely almost simple simply connected algebraic group over a global field by finitely many compact local groups. For a global field k and such a group G, let

 A={v nonarchimedean:rank_(k_v)G=0},

where k_v is the completion at the place v and the rank is the dimension of a maximal k_v-split algebraic torus. The set A is finite, and H_A=product_(v in A)G(k_v) is a compact group with its product topology. Write delta_A:G(k)->H_A for the diagonal homomorphism. The assertion is that every normal subgroup N not contained in the center of G(k) has the form

 N=delta_A^(-1)(W)

for an open normal subgroup W of H_A. No topological closedness or finite-generation hypothesis is imposed on N. If A is empty, the conclusion is N=G(k).
