Invariant Subspace

An invariant subspace of a linear operator T on a vector space is a linear subspace L such that T(L) subset= L. For a bounded operator on a Hilbert space, the invariant subspace problem concerns closed subspaces other than {0} and the whole space. If p is the orthogonal projection onto a closed subspace, invariance is equivalent to

 (I-p)Tp=0.

A hyperinvariant subspace must instead be invariant under every operator in the commutant of T.
