Ida Surface

IdaSurface

The Ida surface is an immersion of the Klein bottle in Euclidean space R^3. It was produced by Ray Idaszak using a family of surfaces developed by George Francis from Apéry's Romboy homotopy (Francis 1987, pp. 178-179).

The family can be parametrized by

 p(theta,tau)=rho(theta,tau)[A(theta)costau+B(theta)sintau],
(1)

where

A(theta)=(r_1cos2theta,r_1sin2theta,r_2)
(2)
B(theta)=(costheta,-sintheta,0)
(3)

and

 rho(theta,tau)=((1-l)costau+l)/(1-(b/sqrt(2))sin3thetasin2tau).
(4)

Here, r_1 and r_2 control the proportions of the surface, and theta and tau are 2pi-periodic. With l=b=1, r_1=1/2, and r_2=1, this gives the Ida surface illustrated above. The denominator is positive, and the parametrization satisfies

 p(theta+pi,2pi-tau)=p(theta,tau),
(5)

which expresses the Klein bottle identification on the parameter torus.

The choices (l,b)=(0,0), (0,1), (1,0), and (1,1) give the Roman surface, Boy surface, Etruscan Venus surface, and Ida surface, respectively (Francis 1987, p. 179).
