Horizontal Perimeter

Horizontal perimeter is the total variation of the horizontal distributional gradient of the characteristic function of a measurable set in a space with a specified horizontal orthonormal basis of vector fields.

For the first Heisenberg group in coordinates (x,y,t) with X=partial_x+ypartial_t and Y=partial_y-xpartial_t, it is

 P_H(E)=|(D_Xchi_E,D_Ychi_E)|(R^3),

where the bars denote total variation, chi_E is the characteristic function of E, and D_X and D_Y are distributional derivatives with respect to Lebesgue measure (Chen et al. 2026). Equivalently, it is the supremum of int_E(Xu+Yv)dxdydt over smooth, compactly supported pairs (u,v) satisfying u^2+v^2<=1.

The Pansu conjecture concerns minimizers of horizontal perimeter at fixed volume.
