Hilbert-Samuel Multiplicity

The Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity e_I(M) of a nonzero finitely generated module M over a Noetherian local ring (R,m) is the leading coefficient of its eventual Hilbert-Samuel function for a m-primary ideal I, multiplied by d!, where d is the Krull dimension of M. Equivalently,

 e_I(M)=lim_(N->infty)(d!l_R(M/I^NM))/(N^d),

where l_R denotes module length (Bruns and Herzog 1998). For I=m and M=R, write e(R)=e_m(R).

For the formal power series ring R=k[[x_1,...,x_d]] over a field k,

 l_R(R/m^N)=(N+d-1; d),

so e(R)=1. In Krull dimension 0, the eventual Hilbert-Samuel function is the module length, and e(R)=l_R(R). This is the local form of module multiplicity. The Lech multiplicity conjecture compares these numbers under flat local homomorphisms.
