Lech's Multiplicity Conjecture

Lech's multiplicity conjecture asserts that a flat local ring homomorphism between nonzero Noetherian local rings R->S satisfies

 e(R)<=e(S),

where e is the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity with respect to each ring's own maximal ideal. Flatness means that S is a flat module over R, and locality means that the homomorphism sends the maximal ideal of R into that of S. The maximal ideals need not satisfy m_RS=m_S.
