Group-Ring Determinant Conjecture

The group-ring determinant conjecture asserts a nonnegative logarithmic determinant for every matrix over the integral group ring of every discrete group. For a square matrix A in M_n(Z[G]), let T_A act by left convolution on l^2(G)^n. The spectral theorem gives a probability measure mu_A on [0,infty) characterized by

 intq(t)dmu_A(t)=1/nsum_(i=1)^n<q(T_A^*T_A)delta_(e,i),delta_(e,i)>,
(1)

for continuous functions q on the operator spectrum, where delta_(e,i) is the unit vector supported at the identity element in coordinate i. The conjectured inequality for these square matrices is

 int_((0,infty))lntdmu_A(t)>=0.
(2)

The mass at 0 is omitted.

For invertible T_A, the Fuglede-Kadison determinant with the unnormalized matrix extension of the canonical group von Neumann algebra trace satisfies

 lndet_(tau_n)(T_A)=n/2intlntdmu_A(t).
