Fourier Restriction Operator

A Fourier restriction operator maps a Schwartz function f on R^n to its Fourier transform on a specified surface Sigma,

 R_Sigmaf=f^^|_Sigma.

Restriction estimates ask for exponents 1<=p,q<=infty for which

 ||R_Sigmaf||_(L^q(Sigma,dsigma))<=C||f||_(L^p(R^n)),

where sigma is surface measure and C is independent of f. Such an estimate permits extension by density to L^p when p<infty. An arbitrary L^p Fourier transform need not have pointwise values on the surface, so this bounded extension is the meaning of restriction for such data.

The dual estimate is for the Fourier extension operator from L^(q^')(Sigma) to L^(p^')(R^n), where 1/p+1/p^'=1 and 1/q+1/q^'=1. The Fourier restriction conjecture specifies expected sharp ranges for curved surfaces.
