Fourier Extension Operator

A Fourier extension operator associated with a surface Sigma subset R^n and surface measure sigma is the operator

 E_Sigmag(x)=int_Sigmag(xi)e^(2piix·xi)dsigma(xi).

For integrable g, this is the inverse Fourier transform of the measure gdsigma. It is dual to the Fourier restriction operator under the integral pairing.

For the unit sphere S^2 subset R^3 with surface measure sigma(S^2)=4pi, the constant function g=1 gives

 E_(S^2)1(x)=(2sin(2pi||x||))/(||x||)

for x!=0, with value 4pi at x=0. This example belongs to L^q(R^3) for q>3 but fails to belong to L^3. It explains the strict output exponent in the three-dimensional Fourier restriction conjecture.
