Exact Overlaps Conjecture

The exact overlaps conjecture asserts that a drop in the Hausdorff dimension of a self-similar subset of the real line below its expected value can occur only through exact coincidences of compositions in its defining iterated function system. Let g_i(x)=r_ix+b_i be distinct contracting similarities with 0<|r_i|<1. An exact overlap occurs when two distinct words of the same length in the g_i define the same map.

For positive probabilities p_i summing to 1, let mu=sum_(i)p_idelta_(g_i) and let nu be the unique self-similar probability measure satisfying nu=sum_(i)p_i(g_i)_*nu. Write chi_mu=sum_(i)p_iln|r_i| and h_mu=lim_(m->infty)H(mu^(*m))/m, where H is Shannon entropy and mu^(*m) is the distribution of the composition of m independent maps sampled from mu. Kittle and Kogler (2026) reported the generalized dimension formula

 dimnu=min(1,(h_mu)/(|chi_mu|)).

Here nu is exact-dimensional, meaning that nu([x-epsilon,x+epsilon])=epsilon^(dimnu+o(1)) for nu-almost every x as epsilon->0.

In particular, if there are no exact overlaps, the self-similar attractor K has

 dim_HK=min(1,s),

where sum_(i)|r_i|^s=1. Kittle and Kogler (2026) credit GPT-6 Astra with the initial proof and the key entropy inequality. They report rewriting the argument and supplying a different final deduction, and they take responsibility for the mathematics. Their accompanying Lean formalization has not been independently checked here.
