Étale Cohomology

Étale cohomology of a scheme X is defined using its small étale site X_(et). The objects are étale morphisms U->X, and a covering of U is a family of étale morphisms U_i->U whose images cover U. Morphisms between these objects are morphisms of schemes over X. A sheaf F of Abelian groups on this site assigns a group F(U) to each object, with restriction maps and unique gluing of compatible local sections (Milne 2013, pp. 38-39 and 42).

For such a sheaf F, the étale cohomology groups are the right derived functors of the global-section functor F|->F(X):

 H_(et)^q(X,F)=R^qGamma(X,F),

where q is a nonnegative integer and Gamma(X,F)=F(X). In particular, H_(et)^0(X,F)=F(X) is the Abelian group of global sections (Milne 2013, p. 64).
