Entropy Photon-Number Inequality

The entropy photon-number inequality is a lower bound on the effective photon number associated with the von Neumann entropy of two independently prepared bosonic inputs after passive mixing. Put g(t)=(t+1)ln(t+1)-tlnt for t>=0, with 0ln0=0. This increasing function has inverse g^(-1). For n modes and finite natural-base von Neumann entropy S, define the effective number by g^(-1)(S(rho)/n). For input rho_A tensor rho_B and output modes c_j=sqrt(eta)a_j+sqrt(1-eta)b_j, the assertion is

 g^(-1)(S(rho_C)/n)>=etag^(-1)(S(rho_A)/n)+(1-eta)g^(-1)(S(rho_B)/n).

Here 0<=eta<=1 and a_j,b_j are the Fock space annihilation operators. The reduced output rho_C is obtained by tracing out the other mixed modes.

Modes within each input may be entangled; independence is required between the two inputs.
