Completely Normal Element

A completely normal element of a finite field extension F_(q^n)/F_q is an element alpha that generates a normal basis over every intermediate field. Equivalently, for each divisor d of n, the elements alpha,alpha^(q^d),...,alpha^(q^(d(n/d-1))) form a vector basis over F_(q^d) (Morgan and Mullen 1996).

Primitivity additionally requires alpha to generate the multiplicative group F_(q^n)^×. The Morgan-Mullen conjecture asserts that these two requirements can always be met simultaneously.
