Coboundary Expander

A coboundary expander is a simplicial complex in which the norm of a cochain's coboundary controls its distance from the space of coboundaries. For a finite pure d-dimensional complex Y, let Y(i) denote its faces with i+1 vertices and use cochains with coefficients in the two-element field. Assign each i-face sigma the weight

 w_i(sigma)=(|{tau in Y(d):sigma subset= tau}|)/((d+1; i+1)|Y(d)|).

The norm ||f|| is the sum of the weights of the faces where f is nonzero. The coboundary operator delta_i sums f over the codimension-one faces of an (i+1)-face, modulo 2. Write B^i=imdelta_(i-1), using constant cochains for the reduced degree-zero space B^0. The complex is an epsilon-coboundary expander, for epsilon>0, when the expansion inequality

 ||delta_if||>=epsilonmin_(b in B^i)||f-b||

holds for every cochain f and every degree 0<=i<=d-1. For degree zero this compares an edge boundary with the smaller weighted side of a vertex partition.

The inequality forces vanishing of reduced cohomology in these degrees, since every cocycle must have zero distance from the space of coboundaries.
