Cheeger Energy

The Cheeger energy of a function on a metric measure space is the lower semicontinuous relaxation in L^2 of its squared local Lipschitz slope. For a Lipschitz function f, that slope is lipf(x)=limsup_(y->x)|f(y)-f(x)|/d(x,y), taken as 0 at an isolated point. The energy is

 Ch(f)=inf_(f_j->f in L^2)liminf_(j)1/2int(lipf_j)^2dm,

where the infimum is over Lipschitz approximations with finite energy. Its finite-energy domain is the metric Sobolev space W^(1,2). On a smooth Riemannian manifold with its volume measure, the energy is 1/2int||del f||^2dm. Quadraticity of this energy is the Riemannian requirement in the definition of an RCD space.
