Cardy Formula

Cardy's formula is a conformally invariant prediction for the probability of a crossing in critical planar percolation. Let D be a bounded Jordan domain with four distinct counterclockwise boundary points a,b,c,d. A conformal map to the upper half-plane takes a,c,d to 0, 1, and infinity, respectively, and takes b to x in (0,1). For a crossing joining the boundary arcs ab and cd, the formula is

 F(x)=(int_0^x[u(1-u)]^(-2/3)du)/(int_0^1[u(1-u)]^(-2/3)du).

It is equivalently expressed using a hypergeometric function as

 F(x)=(Gamma(2/3))/(Gamma(1/3)Gamma(4/3))x^(1/3)_2F_1(1/3,2/3;4/3;x).

The crossing probability is determined by the conformal position of the four marked points. In particular, F(1-x)=1-F(x) and F(1/2)=1/2.

Cardy (1992) derived the formula, and Smirnov (2001) proved it for critical site percolation on the triangular lattice.
