Whitney Number

The Whitney numbers of a matroid encode the numbers and incidence structure of its flats. For a loopless matroid M of matroid rank r on an n-element ground set, the Whitney number of the second kind W_i is the number of flats of matroid rank i. The unsigned Whitney numbers of the first kind w_i are defined by

 chi_M(t)=sum_(A subset= E)(-1)^(|A|)t^(r-r(A))=sum_(i=0)^r(-1)^iw_it^(r-i),

where E is the ground set, r(A) is matroid rank, and chi_M is the characteristic polynomial of the matroid (Dong and Liu 2026).

Dong and Liu (2026) proved Brylawski's conjecture that the sequence w_i/(n; i) is a logarithmically concave sequence. The normalization uses the size n of the ground set, not the matroid rank r. They also proved the points-lines-planes inequality W_2^2>=(3/2)W_1W_3 for matroids of matroid rank at least three, together with a sharper version and equality characterizations. This does not assert that the entire sequence W_i is a logarithmically concave sequence, the different, refuted Mason's conjecture on flats.
