A test function for a generalized function on an open domain is a smooth
function with compact support
inside that domain. The usual space is denoted . A generalized
function acts continuously and linearly on this space, so a random generalized
function is observed by its values on test functions. For example, a locally
integrable function
gives the pairing
. Gaussian
free-field limits of discrete heights use these smooth spatial averages, rather
than pointwise limits.
