Taube Surface

TaubeSurface

The name Taube surface is used by Hauser for the quintic surface

 256z^3-128x^2z^2+16x^4z+144xy^2z-4x^3y^2-27y^4=0.

Its German name means "dove." The defining polynomial is the polynomial discriminant of t^4+xt^2+yt+z with respect to t.

The real parametrized surface associated with the swallowtail catastrophe lies on the Taube surface and corresponds to quartics with a repeated real polynomial root. The real zero set of the implicit equation also contains points absent from that parametrized image. For example, (x,y,z)=(2,0,1) gives the quartic equation (t^2+1)^2=0, whose repeated roots are nonreal.
