Sum and Difference of Cubes

The sum and difference of cubes identities are

a^3+b^3=(a+b)(a^2-ab+b^2)
(1)
a^3-b^3=(a-b)(a^2+ab+b^2).
(2)

These factorizations hold in every commutative ring, and more generally whenever a and b commute.
