Stable Grothendieck Polynomial

A stable Grothendieck polynomial G_lambda is the symmetric formal power series

 G_lambda(x)=sum_(T)(-1)^(|T|-|lambda|)x^T,

where T ranges over set-valued semistandard Young tableaux of shape lambda. Each box contains a nonempty finite set of positive integers, with the largest entry in a box at most the smallest entry in the next box in its row and strictly less than the smallest entry in the box below it. Here |T| counts entries, |lambda| counts boxes, and x^T is the product of the variables indexed by all entries (Buch 2002). In finitely many variables, its lowest-degree homogeneous component is the Schur polynomial s_lambda.

For partitions lambda,mu, define their join and meet componentwise by (lambda v mu)_i=max(lambda_i,mu_i) and (lambda ^ mu)_i=min(lambda_i,mu_i). Guo et al. (2026) proved the Thomas-Yong conjecture (Thomas and Yong 2009) that

 G_(lambda v mu)G_(lambda ^ mu)-G_lambdaG_mu=sum_(nu)c_nu(-1)^(|nu|-|lambda|-|mu|)G_nu,

where every c_nu is a nonnegative integer. Guo et al. (2026) report that ChatGPT supplied the main proof strategy.
