Singleton Bound

The Singleton bound states that a code C of length n over an alphabet of size q, with minimum Hamming distance d, satisfies

 |C|<=q^(n-d+1).

Deleting any d-1 coordinates maps distinct codewords to distinct words, which proves the bound. For a linear code of dimension k, it becomes d<=n-k+1. A code attaining equality is a maximum distance separable code (Fan 2026).
