Semicircular Distribution

The semicircular distribution of variance sigma^2>0 is the probability distribution on the real line with density

 f_sigma(x)=1/(2pisigma^2)sqrt(4sigma^2-x^2)

for |x|<=2sigma, and zero otherwise. Its mean is zero and its variance is sigma^2. It is the limiting distribution in Wigner's semicircle law. A variance-one freely independent family with this distribution supplies the noise in nonmicrostates free entropy.
