Rodrigues Representation

A Rodrigues representation for a classical family of orthogonal polynomials expresses its nth member as an nth derivative of an auxiliary function, multiplied by a specified factor.

For a nonnegative integer n and a real number x with -1<x<1, the Chebyshev polynomial of the first kind has the representation

 T_n(x)=((-1)^nsqrt(pi))/(2^nGamma(n+1/2))(1-x^2)^(1/2)(d^n)/(dx^n)(1-x^2)^(n-1/2),

and the Chebyshev polynomial of the second kind has the representation

 U_n(x)=((-1)^n(n+1)sqrt(pi))/(2^(n+1)Gamma(n+3/2))(1-x^2)^(-1/2)(d^n)/(dx^n)(1-x^2)^(n+1/2),

where Gamma(z) is the gamma function.
