Quasisymmetric Function

A quasisymmetric function in ordered commuting variables is a formal power series of bounded total degree whose coefficient of x_(i_1)^(a_1)...x_(i_k)^(a_k), for i_1<...<i_k, depends only on the positive integers a_1, ..., a_k. It need not be invariant under arbitrary permutations of the variables. For example,

 M_((1,2))=sum_(i<j)x_ix_j^2

is quasisymmetric but is not symmetric. The functions M_alpha, indexed by compositions alpha, give its monomial basis. Chromatic quasisymmetric functions record proper graph colorings with a statistic depending on the order of the vertices.
