Proportional Choice Number

The proportional choice number chi_(pc)(G) of a finite nonempty simple graph G is the least positive integer k such that every assignment of a list L(v) of k colors to each graph vertex admits a proper list coloring in which each color c is used either |_eta_L(c)/k_| or [eta_L(c)/k] times. Here eta_L(c) is the number of lists containing c, and |_x_| and [x] are the floor function and ceiling function, respectively (Kaul et al. 2019). Thus the use of each color is proportional, up to rounding, to its availability in the lists.

Mudrock (2026) proved chi_(pc)(G)<=2^(chi^'(G)), where chi^'(G) is the edge chromatic number. In particular, every path graph has proportional choice number at most 4. For positive integers a,b, the graph disjoint union of a+b-1 copies of the complete bipartite graph K_(a,b) has proportional choice number a+b. These examples disprove the proposed bound chi_(pc)(G)<=Delta(G)+1, where Delta(G) is the maximum vertex degree.
