Preparata Code

A Preparata code is a member of a family of nonlinear binary error-correcting codes whose quaternary versions are linear over the ring Z_4. For odd m>=3, a quaternary Preparata code P_m has length N=2^m and 4^(N-m-1) codewords. Its binary image under the Gray map has length 2N and minimum Hamming distance six (Hammons et al. 1994).

Maharaj (2026) proved that P_m, considered in the quaternary Hamming distance, has minimum distance four and covering radius two. It is a quasi-perfect code with covering density

 (9N^2-3N+2)/(8N^2)->9/8.

The analogous construction for even m>=2 has Hamming covering radius three. The case m=3 is the octacode. Maharaj (2026) states that Claude assisted with searches and the proof and that the computational claims were independently verified by programs.
