Covering Code

A covering code of radius R is a code C of length n over an alphabet of size q such that every word is at Hamming distance at most R from some codeword in C. The least such R is its covering radius, and K_q(n,R) denotes the smallest possible number of codewords in a covering code of radius at most R.

The covering density is

 mu(C)=(|C|)/(q^n)sum_(i=0)^R(n; i)(q-1)^i.

It is at least one, with equality for a perfect code.

Maharaj (2026) obtained K_4(n,2)<=4^(n-m-1) for every odd integer m>=3 and n>=2^m, using quaternary Preparata codes. In particular, the octacode gives 251<=K_4(8,2)<=256, where the upper bound improves 352. A separate construction gives K_4(6,2)<=48, improving 52. Maharaj (2026) states that Claude assisted with the searches and proof and that independent programs verified the computational claims.
