Perfect Closure

The perfect closure of a field F of characteristic p>0, inside a fixed algebraic closure, is

 F^i= union _(n>=0)F^(1/p^n),

where F^(1/p^n) consists of the elements whose p^nth powers lie in F. It is a purely inseparable extension and the smallest perfect field containing F in that closure. In characteristic zero, the perfect closure is F itself.

The Frobenius map is an automorphism of F^i, so integer powers with negative exponents are also defined. Passing to this closure removes the purely inseparable ambiguity in the function field reconstruction assertions using prime-to-characteristic invariants.
