Parametric Surface


A parametric surface is the image of a two-parameter map from a region D subset= R^2 into three-dimensional space. It is commonly written

 r(u,v)=(x(u,v),y(u,v),z(u,v)),

for (u,v) in D. At a point where the partial derivatives r_u and r_v are linearly independent, their cross product is nonzero and the parameterization describes a regular surface locally.
