Pair Potential

A pair potential specifies an interaction energy for each pair of particles, with total energy given by the sum over distinct pairs. For a radial difference-only potential in R^3, the energy is

 U_N(x_1,...,x_N)=sum_(1<=i<j<=N)phi(||x_i-x_j||).

Stability means that U_N>=-BN for some constant B<infty, for every finite particle configuration. This linear lower bound prevents the energy per particle from diverging to minus infinity as particles accumulate. An integrable tail satisfies int_R^inftyr^2|phi(r)|dr<infty for some R.
