Notakto is an impartial game in misère form based on tic-tac-toe. Two players share
a positive finite number of initially empty boards and alternate placing
a single X in an empty cell of any available board. A board containing three Xs in a row, column, or diagonal is
removed from play. The player who completes the last three-in-a-row on the last available
board loses (Plambeck and Whitehead 2014).
On a single initially empty board, the center is the only winning opening under perfect play. After any noncentral opening, the second player
can mark the diametrically opposite cell. The center then becomes an immediately
losing move. After any later opponent move that does not end the game,
the second player marks the opposite cell, using a rotation
of about the center. This restores
opposite pairs of Xs. If such a response completed three-in-a-row, the preceding
opponent move would already have completed three-in-a-row (Plambeck and Whitehead
2014).
