Morphic Number

A morphic number is a real number r>1 for which there exist positive integers k and l such that

r+1=r^k
(1)
r-1=r^(-l).
(2)

Thus both r+1 and r-1 are integer powers of r (Aarts et al. 2001, p. 57).

The only morphic numbers are the golden ratio phi and the plastic constant rho (Aarts et al. 2001, p. 58). The golden ratio satisfies phi+1=phi^2 and phi-1=phi^(-1), so has (k,l)=(2,1). The plastic constant satisfies rho+1=rho^3 and rho-1=rho^(-4), so has (k,l)=(3,4).
