Maps To

The maps-to symbol |-> specifies the assignment of a value to an argument by a function. The notation x|->f(x) is read x maps to f(x) (Lang 2002, p. ix).

The ordinary arrow in f:A->B specifies the domain A and codomain B. These declarations can be combined, as in f:R->R, x|->x^2, for the function that squares real numbers. The equality f(x)=x^2 gives the value of f at x.

The argument need not be a number. If beta:V×V->F is a bilinear form on a vector space V over a field F, then for fixed u in V the notation v|->beta(v,u) specifies a linear functional (Axler 2024, p. 333).
