Large Fundamental Group

A smooth connected projective complex variety X has large fundamental group when, for every positive-dimensional closed irreducible subvariety Z, the image of pi_1(Z^nu)->pi_1(X) is infinite. Here Z^nu is the normalization. This is equivalent to the universal cover containing no positive-dimensional compact complex analytic subvariety. It imposes a condition on all subvarieties, not only on the size of pi_1(X) itself.
