Jacobi Field

A Jacobi field along a geodesic is the infinitesimal variation field of a smooth variation through geodesics. It satisfies the linear differential equation

 del _(gamma^.)^2J+R(J,gamma^.)gamma^.=0,

where R is the Riemann tensor with convention R(X,Y)=del _Xdel _Y-del _Ydel _X-del _([X,Y]). A nonzero Jacobi field vanishing at two distinct times characterizes conjugate points along the geodesic. In Euclidean space, parallel coordinates give J(t)=a+tb, so no nonzero Jacobi field vanishes at two times. On the unit sphere, a normal Jacobi field can be J(t)=sin(t)E(t) for a parallel normal field E, giving conjugate points at distance pi.
