Hunger Game

A hunger game is a greedy dynamical process associated with a finite Markov chain. Each state i has a real hunger h_i. At each step, a state of maximum hunger is selected, with ties resolved by a fixed priority order. Firing state i subtracts 1 from h_i and adds P_(ij) to every h_j, where P is the transition matrix. Total hunger is conserved.

For an irreducible transition matrix P with rational entries and stationary distribution pi, let T be the least positive integer such that Tpi has integer coordinates. Huang and Tian (2026) proved that every periodic orbit has least period T, with state i firing exactly Tpi_i times. The set of periodic states with total hunger zero tiles the hyperplane sum_(i)h_i=0 by translations of a lattice.
