Herz Surface

herz surface with its singular axis marked in orange

The Herz surface is the quartic surface

 y^2+z^3=z^4+x^2z^2,

named by Hauser. Its German name means "heart" (Real Sociedad Matemática Española 2011, p. 67). Its singular points form the x-axis.

The cross section by the plane y=0 consists of this axis and the circle

 x^2+(z-1/2)^2=1/4.

Near the origin, the polynomial map (X,Y,Z)=(z(z-1),(z-1)y,x) is an invertible change of coordinates taking the Herz surface to the kolibri surface Y^2=X^3+X^2Z^2. The sextic heart surfaces have different defining equations.
