Hedetniemi's Conjecture

Hedetniemi's conjecture, disproved by Shitov (2019), asserted that the chromatic number of the graph tensor product of any two finite simple graphs G and H, each with at least one graph vertex, satisfies

 chi(G×H)=min{chi(G),chi(H)},

where chi denotes the chromatic number (Hedetniemi 1966).

A minimum vertex coloring of G gives a vertex coloring of G×H by assigning the graph vertex (g,h) the color of g. Applying the same argument to H shows that chi(G×H)<=min{chi(G),chi(H)} always holds (Shitov 2019, p. 663).

El-Zahar and Sauer (1985) proved that equality holds whenever min{chi(G),chi(H)}<=4. Tardif (2023) showed that there are simple graphs G and H with chi(G)=chi(H)=5 but chi(G×H)=4. Thus 5 is the smallest possible value of the smaller factor chromatic number in a counterexample.
