Graph Expectation Threshold

The graph expectation threshold of a finite simple graph H in the random graph G(n,p) is the smallest probability p for which every subgraph of H has expectation value at least 1/2 for its number of copies (Kahn and Kalai 2007). Here H has at least one edge and at most n vertices, with n>=2, and each possible edge of G(n,p) is present independently with probability p. Writing N(G,F) for the number of subgraphs of G isomorphic to F, the definition is

 p_E(n,H)=inf{p in [0,1]:E[N(G(n,p),F)]>=1/2 for every F subset= H}.

Copies are ordinary subgraphs, so additional edges between the chosen vertices are allowed. The use of expected count 1 instead of 1/2 changes p_E by a factor of at most 2.

The containment threshold is

 p_c(n,H)=inf{p in [0,1]:Pr(N(G(n,p),H)>0)>=1/2}.

One has p_E(n,H)<=p_c(n,H), since containing H also supplies a copy of each subgraph F. For the single-edge graph H=K_2, put M=(n; 2). Then p_E(n,K_2)=1/(2M) and p_c(n,K_2)=1-2^(-1/M).

The second Kahn-Kalai conjecture asks whether p_c(n,H) is at most a universal constant times p_E(n,H)lnn, even when H varies with n (Kahn and Kalai 2007).

This graph expectation threshold differs from the integral expectation threshold q(F_H), where F_H is the increasing graph property of containing a copy of H. In particular, p_E(n,H)<=q(F_H), so an upper bound in terms of q(F_H) alone does not establish the second Kahn-Kalai conjecture.
