Global Attractor

A global attractor for a continuous semiflow S(t) on a metric space X is a nonempty compact set A that is strictly invariant, meaning S(t)A=A for t>=0, and attracts every bounded set in X. More explicitly, for every bounded set B subset= X,

 lim_(t->infty)sup_(x in B)inf_(a in A)d(S(t)x,a)=0.

Here d is the metric, and the semiflow satisfies S(0)x=x and S(t+s)x=S(t)S(s)x for s,t>=0 (Temam 1997).

A global attractor need not contain a dense trajectory. It can contain several equilibrium points, periodic orbits, and trajectories joining them. For example, the differential equation x^.=x-x^3 on R has global attractor [-1,1], containing the three equilibrium points -1, 0, and 1. This broader notion is relevant to the unrestricted formulation of Eden's conjecture.
