Geodesic Transversal Number

The geodesic transversal number gt(G) of a finite connected simple graph G is the smallest vertex count of a vertex set meeting every maximal graph geodesic. A geodesic is maximal when it is not a proper subpath of a longer shortest path. Its length need not equal the graph diameter (Manuel et al. 2022).

For a complete graph K_n with n>=2, every edge is a maximal geodesic, so gt(K_n)=n-1. A path graph instead has a single maximal geodesic and transversal number 1.

For the hypercube graph Q_n, Chen et al. (2026) proved

 [(2^n)/([n/2]+1)]<=gt(Q_n)<=(n; |_n/2_|)

for n>=2. Here [x] and |_x_| denote the ceiling function and floor function.
