Forsythe Matrix

A Forsythe matrix is a Jordan block with a perturbation in its lower left corner (Higham 1995, p. 43). For n>=2, it is

 A=J_lambda+alphae_ne_1^T,

where J_lambda has lambda on the main diagonal and ones on the superdiagonal, e_j is the jth standard basis vector, and T denotes the transpose. Its characteristic polynomial is

 det(tI-A)=(t-lambda)^n-alpha.

For alpha!=0, its eigenvalues lie on a circle of radius |alpha|^(1/n) centered at lambda. A very small change in a single entry can therefore produce a much larger displacement of eigenvalues from those of the unperturbed Jordan block.

The plot uses n=8, lambda=0, and alpha=10^(-16) (green), 10^(-8) (orange), and 10^(-4) (blue).
