An experimental unit is the smallest division of experimental material to which a treatment is assigned independently. It may be a person, an animal, a field plot, a manufactured item, or another object or group, depending on the experiment. Several measurements may be made on one experimental unit, so an experimental unit need not be the same as an individual observation.
