A control group is a group of experimental units (the individuals or objects to which treatments are assigned) used as a baseline for comparison with groups receiving the treatments of primary interest. Depending on the experiment, a control group may receive no treatment, a standard treatment, or a placebo (an inactive treatment made to resemble the treatment being studied).
