Erdős Matching Conjecture

The Erdős matching conjecture asserts that an r-uniform hypergraph on n vertices with no s+1 pairwise vertex-disjoint hyperedges has at most

 max(nr-n-sr,r(s+1)-1r)

hyperedges, for integers r>=2, s>=1, and n>=r(s+1) (Erdős 1965, Frankl 2017).

Both candidate bounds are attained. One construction takes all r-subsets meeting a fixed s-element set; the other takes all r-subsets of a set of r(s+1)-1 vertices, leaving the remaining vertices isolated. The conjecture remains open in general (Bloom 2026).

This is problem 1020 in the Erdős problems collection (Bloom 2026).
