Epigraph

The epigraph of a real-valued function f:X->R, where X subset= R^n, is the subset of X×R lying on or above its function graph,

 epi(f)={(x,t):t>=f(x)}.

When X is a convex set, f is a convex function iff its epigraph is a convex set. Similarly, f is lower semicontinuous iff its epigraph is a closed set in X×R.
