Discrete Gaussian Model

The discrete Gaussian model is a lattice height model with heights constrained to a fixed multiple of the integers and a Gibbs measure weight quadratic in their differences. One convention uses sigma_x in 2piZ, a finite symmetric step set J subset Z^2\{0}, and the weight

 exp(-1/(4beta|J|)sum_(x)sum_(y in J)(sigma_(x+y)-sigma_x)^2).

Here beta>0 is a temperature parameter. Zero heights outside a finite region specify a boundary condition. The factor |J| corresponds to the normalized lattice Laplacian Delta_Jf(x)=|J|^(-1)sum_(y in J)(f(x+y)-f(x)).
