Dependent Events


DependentEvents

Two events A and B are dependent if they are not independent events, so that

 P(A intersection B)!=P(A)P(B).

In the area model shown above, P(A)=1/2, P(B)=2/5, and P(A intersection B)=1/4, whereas P(A)P(B)=1/5. When P(B)>0, this is equivalent to P(A|B)!=P(A). Dependence need not imply a causal relation between the events.
