Cuspidal Cubic

CuspidalCubic

A cuspidal cubic is a cubic curve defined by an irreducible polynomial and having a cusp. A standard affine example is the semicubical parabola

 y^2=x^3.

Its only singular point is the origin, where its tangent line is y=0, counted twice. In contrast, the nodal cubic y^2=x^2(x+1) has two distinct tangent lines y=+/-x at the origin (Faber and Hauser 2010, pp. 374-375).
